Everything you need to know to provide the best home for your new companion
Diet & Nutrition
Balanced diet of 50% pellets, 30% fresh fruits and vegetables, 20% nuts and seeds. They love sunflower seeds, mangoes, and papayas. Limit fatty foods to maintain healthy weight.
Housing & Environment
Large cage essential - minimum 36"x24"x48" with 1" bar spacing. Need sturdy perches and plenty of chew toys. A play gym outside cage is highly recommended for exercise.
Social Needs
Form strong single-person bonds but can be family birds with proper socialization. Need 3-4 hours daily interaction. Can be nippy during adolescence - consistent boundaries important.
Health Considerations
Watch for signs of Macaw Wasting Syndrome, feather issues, and beak problems. Regular beak and nail maintenance required. Prone to obesity without adequate exercise.
Training Tips
Highly trainable with patience. Establish trust before training. They're vocal and can learn words and tricks. Target training works well. Always use positive reinforcement.
