Caring for Your Jake
Everything you need to know to provide the best home for your new companion
Diet & Nutrition
Lower fat diet than macaws - 60% pellets, 35% vegetables and fruits, 5% seeds/nuts. They love carrots, broccoli, and berries. Limit sunflower seeds and other fatty foods.
Housing & Environment
Sturdy cage minimum 36"x24"x48" with 1" bar spacing. Powder-coated or stainless steel essential. Need many destructible toys - they're heavy chewers. Cover cage at night for 12 hours sleep.
Social Needs
Extremely affectionate and can become 'velcro birds.' Need 4+ hours daily interaction. Prone to behavioral issues if under-stimulated. Best for homes where someone is frequently present.
Health Considerations
Highly prone to feather plucking and self-mutilation from stress. Susceptible to fatty tumors and Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease. Need consistent routines to prevent anxiety.
Training Tips
Very intelligent but can be stubborn. Consistency is key. Focus on independence training to prevent over-bonding. They're moderate talkers but excellent at learning tricks.
