Diet & Nutrition
A balanced diet of high-quality pellets (60%), fresh fruits and vegetables (30%), and seeds/nuts as treats (10%). Favorites include almonds, walnuts, apples, carrots, and leafy greens. Avoid avocado, chocolate, and caffeine.
Housing & Environment
Requires a spacious cage minimum 36"x24"x48" with bar spacing of 3/4" to 1". Multiple perches of varying diameters, plenty of toys for mental stimulation, and a play stand outside the cage for daily interaction.
Social Needs
African Greys form deep bonds and require 2-4 hours of daily interaction. They can become feather pluckers if neglected. They thrive on routine and may take time to warm up to new people.
Health Considerations
Prone to calcium deficiency, respiratory issues, and feather plucking from stress. Regular vet checkups every 6-12 months recommended. Watch for signs of boredom or anxiety.
Training Tips
Highly intelligent and eager to learn. Start with step-up training, then progress to speech training. Use positive reinforcement with treats. They can learn extensive vocabularies of 1000+ words.
