Caring for Your Hyacinth Macaw
Everything you need to know to provide the best home for your new companion
Diet & Nutrition
Unique dietary needs - requires higher fat content. Palm nuts are their natural food. Provide macadamia nuts, Brazil nuts, and coconut along with pellets. Fresh fruits and vegetables daily.
Housing & Environment
Needs the largest enclosure possible - ideally a custom aviary or dedicated bird room. Minimum cage size 48"x36"x60" with 1.5" bar spacing. Extremely strong beak requires stainless steel construction.
Social Needs
Despite their size, they're incredibly gentle. Need extensive daily interaction (4+ hours). Very social and enjoy being part of family activities. Can become destructive if bored.
Health Considerations
Generally hardy but prone to Proventricular Dilatation Disease (PDD). Beak overgrowth can occur without proper items to chew. Annual vet checkups essential.
Training Tips
Intelligent and trainable. Their gentle nature makes training enjoyable. Focus on recall training and flight training if possible. They're not the best talkers but can learn some words.
