Caring for Your Baby Scarlet Macaw
Everything you need to know to provide the best home for your new companion
Diet & Nutrition
Currently hand-fed baby formula. Once weaned: high-quality pellets, fresh fruits and vegetables, and nuts such as walnuts and almonds. Avoid avocado, chocolate and caffeine.
Housing & Environment
Once grown, needs a very large, sturdy cage at least 48"x36"x60" with heavy-gauge bars, plus a play stand and plenty of chew toys.
Social Needs
Macaws are very social and need several hours of daily interaction. Hand-fed babies bond closely with their new families.
Health Considerations
Regular avian vet checkups every 6-12 months. Provide a balanced diet and plenty of exercise to avoid obesity and boredom.
Training Tips
Start gentle handling and step-up training early. Use positive reinforcement with treats and lots of praise.
